What a Failing Cable Looks Like Before It Snaps

A garage door cable rarely fails without warning. Watch for a few specific signs:

  • Visible fraying, kinks, or broken strands near the bottom bracket
  • The door hangs crooked or sits unevenly once it is closed
  • A loud bang from the garage followed by the door refusing to move
  • A cable that has slipped off its drum but has not snapped
  • Rust or pitting along the cable, more common after summer dust and monsoon moisture work into an older coil
  • The door reverses, stalls, or struggles partway through opening or closing

Cables work under the same high tension as the springs they run beside, so this is not a repair to attempt yourself. A cable that lets go under load can snap back hard enough to cause a serious injury, and taking the wrong bracket off first can drop the door on whoever is standing under it. According to DASMA, the door and access systems industry’s manufacturer association, spring and cable service belongs to a trained technician for exactly this reason. If you see any of the signs above, call us before the cable fails completely rather than after.

Great experience with All Garage Door Pros. They installed a new double insulated garage door with excellent quality at a fair price. Very professional and honest—they truly stand by their work. They even helped fix some pre-existing exterior damage, which was above and beyond. Highly recommend!

Crazy start to a weekend! Was on my way out of town to San Diego after dropping off my car for maintenance before the drive when my garage door dropped after trying to drive out of the garage. Called Jason who walked me through how to get the garage shut so that I can leave with the garage door closed. And diagnosed the broken springs with just pictures! Was able to get to my garage as soon as I got back from out of town and fixed my garage door within an hour even helped with installing a smart hub so that I no longer worry if I left the garage open. Great service and pricing!

How We Handle a Cable Call, Start to Finish

  1. Call or book online. Tell us what the door is doing (hanging crooked, stuck, or a cable you can see is damaged) so the technician arrives with the right parts.
  2. We inspect the full lift system on site, cables, drums, springs, and track alignment, not just the obvious symptom. A cable rarely fails on its own: a worn drum or a spring that has already lost tension puts extra strain on the cable next to it.
  3. We walk you through what we found and quote the work before touching anything. A single frayed cable on an otherwise sound system can sometimes be repaired on its own, but we usually recommend replacing both cables together, even if only one has failed, since they wear at close to the same rate. If the torsion or extension springs show their own wear, we will say so and quote that at the same time rather than scheduling a second visit.
  4. Most cable jobs finish the same visit, since our trucks stock common cable sizes and gauges matched to your door’s weight.
  5. We run the door through a full open-close cycle and check balance before we consider the job done.

What Las Vegas Heat Does to a Garage Door Cable

Cables wear the same way springs do, through thousands of open-and-close cycles rather than a single event. Two things speed that process up here in the valley: heat and rust. Intense summer heat on an attached garage dries out the lubrication on the drums and springs faster than it would in a milder climate, which lets the cable rub against the drum and fray sooner. Rust shows up less from rain and more from the abrasive dust that works into the cable strands over a hot, dry summer. A door that opens and closes several times a day, a home with teenagers or a second vehicle in regular use, tends to reach cable trouble on the early end of a typical 7 to 10 year service life rather than the late end.

Cable Repair Questions We Hear Most

We do not recommend it. Garage door cables stay under high tension whenever the door is closed, and releasing that tension the wrong way, or in the wrong order relative to the spring, can cause serious injury or drop the door unexpectedly. This is a job for a trained technician with the right tools.

It depends on whether one cable or the full set needs replacing, whether the spring or drum is also affected, and your door’s size. We give an exact quote after inspecting the door, before any work begins.

Most cables last as long as the springs they run alongside, generally 7 to 10 years, though Las Vegas heat and dust can shorten that window on doors used several times a day.

A broken spring usually makes the door feel heavy or impossible to lift, while a snapped cable more often lets one side of the door drop or hang crooked, since the cable is what keeps that side connected to the drum. Either failure can look similar from the driveway, which is why we inspect the whole system rather than guess from the symptom.

Usually both, even if only one has failed. Garage door cables see the same wear over the same number of cycles, so a second failure within weeks of the first repair is common enough that most homeowners prefer to handle both in one visit.

Most cable repairs finish the same day you call, often in a single visit, since our trucks carry the cable sizes most Las Vegas doors use.
